Facebook Debuts ‘Live’ Streaming Video Feature — For Celebs

FacebookYesterday, Facebook launched “Live,” a feature in its Mentions app that allows for live streaming video feeds. For now, it’s only available to celebrities with a verified page.

Celebs can start a live broadcast posted to the News Feed, watch comments in real time on their stream, and then make the recording permanently available for viewing.

Live product manager Vadim Lavrusik told TechCrunch:

“We think this will be an awesome experience for both public figures and also users. We want to get feedback from both public figures and viewers as we evolve the product.”

So why should celebs use Facebook Live instead of other established live streaming services like Periscope or Meerkat?

Simply, because that’s where their fans are. Why try making Mohammed come to the mountain when you can take the mountain to Mohammed?

Hollywood actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was the first to try it out, with a live stream from the gym he captioned “Clangin’ & Bangin’ in the Iron Paradise.”
